Between Dogs and Wolves

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

If the dog drops the wolf, this clever offspring will have known a true global success. It now exceeds, demographically, his distant ancestor. According to Ray Coppinger, canine ethologist and professor at Hampshire College in Massachusetts, there are now 1000 times more dogs than wolves on land, or 400 million doggies!

The domestic dog, as we know it today has a much more complex behavior than the wolf. He even acquired over millennia of selection, talent and remarkable physical qualities. Some Huskies can go four times and 40 km per day, and this three days running. A feat that no wolf can not accomplish.

When comparing animals of the same weight, the dog’s head is smaller than the wolf. The dog’s skull is flatter and less robust, and contains a brain smaller than the wolf. Dogs have teeth too small. By cons, their skin is thicker than the wolf. With this unfortunate corollary that the Eskimo people prefer to dress the skins of dogs, which last about six years, while a wolf skin will do them a season. (more…)

Brief Historical Overview

The first mammals appeared there 200 million years. They ate grass and populated much of the globe.

Species diversification gave birth, there are 100 million years to creodonts which they feed on meat. These were the first predators.

The creodonts evolved in turn, and 50 million years before our era, they gave way to Miacides, small carnivores in the size and appearance of the weasel. They settled in North America and Eurasia, they won by the Bering Strait, not yet immersed at the time. It was there 35 million years.

During the 25 million years following this family of carnivores took root in different regions, evolving according to climate, terrain and different game that he had to adapt. The Miacides became Cynodictis, and then Hesperocyon Tomarctus.

There are 10 million years, people returned to North America, their random migration, settled there. Then appeared Lépophagus Canis, which can be regarded as the ancestor of modern Canid. In turn, he repassed the Bering Strait. (more…)
